Jews and 19th Century French Grand Opera
Napoleon Bonaparte gave the French Jews complete emancipation;
two Jewish composers reigned supreme at the Opéra and established the style of Grand Opera.
Another, Jacques Offenbach, conquered the lighter vein with the Opéra bouffes.
